Active Head Rests swiftly and securely catch the back of the front seat occupant’s head by moving diagonally upwards during a rear-end collision to help reduce the degree of impact to the occupant’s neck and lessen the severity of a whiplash injury.

Content of Safety Functions

Situation (Activation trigger)
During a rear-end collision

Function (System/Components)
Active Head Rest (Lower unit + Upper unit + Headrest)

Operation (Operation mechanism)
When the occupant's back presses against the seatback, a built-in lower unit signals an upper unit through a cable which then makes the headrest move diagonally upwards

Result (Mechanical phenomenon after activation)
The moved headrest will swiftly and securely catch the back of the occupant’s head

Benefits

Active Head Rests securely catch the back of the front seat occupant’s head by moving the headrest diagonally upwards during a rear-end collision to contribute to lessening impact on the neck. They help mitigate whiplash injury.
